In the role of special needs coordinator/ remedial specialist, you will primarily be responsible for supporting our partner schools with developing and monitoring their remedial strategies for our learners with barriers and to provide hands-on support to the School Based Support Teams. You will report to the Head of Education and receive ongoing training and mentoring in this role.

Key responsibilities
The precise areas of responsibility for this post will be agreed based around your skills and
the needs of the schools, but it is anticipated that you will be able to:

  • Set-up or enhance and pro-actively support the School Based Support Teams at all our partner schools
  • Working with teachers, our education team and our data analyst, identify learners with barriers that require referral to the school’s SBST
  • Work alongside teachers to identify appropriate support for learners aligned to the SIAS policy
  • Support the development of individual learner support plans as a member of the SBST
  • Arrange for assessments to take place
  • Interpret a range of assessments
  • Support teaching staff to track SBST learners’ progress and provide feedback to the senior management team
  • Facilitate workshops, share tools and expertise and offer support to teachers that teach learners with barriers
  • Pro-actively develop appropriate interventions based on behavioural trends and the needs of the school
  • Embed a culture of “know every learner” in all Acorn Education schools
  • Contribute to the strategic direction of learner intervention programmes and teacher development across the schools with the senior management team
  • Facilitate the improvement of academic results for learners with barriers that is aligned to the specific challenges and growth areas for the school
  • Keep abreast with leading practices of excellence within the remedial education field
  • Contribute to the development of a strong positive and inclusive school culture

Essential qualification and experience criteria

  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in a Primary or a High School
  • Must have significant prior experience serving on a School Based Support Team
  • Must have a minimum of 3 years’ experience in a similar role
  • Must have solid knowledge of SIAS (policy on screening, identification, assessment and support) of learners with barriers
  • Must have experience in developing and presenting professional development workshops to teachers at school level
  • Must be a South African national or possess a permanent resident permit
  • Must be fluent in both English and Afrikaans
  • Must have own transport
  • Registration to administer psychometric assessments would be advantageous
